WHY ARE MOST INDUSTRY SCREENINGS IN WELLINGTON??

Some of the members have asked why many of the screenings are in Wellington only and what options there may be to get viewing links if you live elsewhere.

However, it is common for most film screenings to take place in Wellington as it is the primary location for Academy members, VES members, and Bafta members. In the last year, there has been a slight increase in screenings being held in other parts of the country, such as Auckland. Access to these screenings is limited, as they are typically organised by studios contracting with a single distributor.

This means that some screenings are exclusive to certain industry groups. Securing viewing codes for access to films is challenging, as it requires negotiation with each individual studio and/or network, particularly if there is no affiliation with an award. Overall, the availability of screenings and viewing codes is very limited in New Zealand due to the size of the population and number of members of these specific industry groups.

The VFX Guild is able to access a number of these screenings as a result of some of our members' professional relationships, but we have no control over the screening locations, unfortunately. We have too limited resources to negotiate with the individual studios directly per film for broader distribution or viewing links.
