VFX NATIONAL INDUSTRY VALUE

The VFX Guild is putting together a proposal for funding to track the value of the VFX and Animation sector. If we are successful raising the funds, this vital information will be provided to the industry and used to support all of us in conversations about our contribution to the New Zealand economy.

Here is what we have found so far:

According to the last MBIE screen report in 2020, the post-production sector in the screen industry has experienced substantial growth, averaging an annual increase of 33% since 2015.  In contrast, the production sector has only seen a modest average yearly growth of 3% during the same period. According to the NZFC Annual report 2023, a total of 18 out of 29 projects that received the Screen Production Rebate included post-production, digital, and visual effects work. These projects led to an expenditure of around NZ $270 million. It’s important to note that this data was not intended nor does it present a comprehensive overview of the sector's value. According to the latest NZ Tech report 2023 by TIN, the tech sector in New Zealand is valued at approximately $17b, making it the second largest export earner for the country. While this report includes some top earning creative tech businesses in game development, VFX, and animation, it does not provide a complete valuation of the sector due to a limited sample. Since the data is difficult to collect due to the Stats NZ codes, the VFX Guild is considering replicating the NZGDA’s annual survey, which provides the annual overview seen above. Source: https://lnkd.in/gWMVupDz

VFXG is also putting in a submission to StatsNZ to include VFX as a subcategory of the new codes to gather the data automatically in the future.
