VFXG Attends The Lord of the Rings: War of Rohirim Premiere at Hobbiton

Last week, the Visual Effects Guild of Aotearoa New Zealand (VFXG) had the privilege of attending the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim at the iconic Hobbiton Movie Set, hosted by the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC).

The event was a magnificent celebration of New Zealand’s central role in bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life. The premiere boasted an extraordinary line-up of talent, including Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis (Gollum), Brian Cox (Helm Hammerhand), Miranda Otto (Éowyn), Gaia Wise (Héra), and more. Attendees also included the filmmakers: director Kenji Kamiyama, executive producers Peter Jackson, Jason DeMarco, and Joseph Chou, as well as producer Philippa Boyens.

Set amidst the picturesque backdrop of Hobbiton, the evening began with a traditional pōwhiri, followed by enchanting performances from stilt walkers, fire artists, and musicians. Guests enjoyed themed cocktails like “The Hammerhand” and “Héra’s Fire,” adding to the immersive experience.

This premiere is yet another milestone for New Zealand’s globally acclaimed film industry. It served as a reminder of the exceptional contributions from the local screen sector, which has been instrumental in shaping the Lord of the Rings saga and much more.

We extend our gratitude to the NZFC for their continued support this year, including funding the VFXG & SMSG Talent Development Programme, organizing the Kia Ora LA initiative, and inviting us to this incredible celebration!
