Exploring Generative AI in Visual Effects

In an engaging panel hosted by the Visual Effects Society's Technology Committee, industry leaders convened to discuss the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) on the visual effects (VFX) industry. The session, titled "The Future of VFX: Embracing Generative AI," featured insights from Dr. Andrew Glassner of Wētā FX, VES 1st Vice Chair Susan O’Neal, CTO Michele Sciolette from Cinesite Group, and legal expert Stephen Strauss.

Dr. Glassner highlighted the efficiencies and creative possibilities unlocked by AI, reflecting on its evolution and its growing role in VFX. Susan O’Neal emphasised the career implications, urging professionals to adapt to new skills and opportunities presented by AI advancements. Michele Sciolette discussed the technical integration of GenAI tools into VFX workflows, showcasing how these innovations enhance output quality and production speed. Addressing legal considerations, Stephen Strauss spoke on the importance of navigating copyright and ethical issues as AI becomes more prevalent in creative processes. 

Moderated by Barbara Ford Grant, the panel provided a comprehensive overview of GenAI's transformative potential, concluding with a call to embrace continuous learning and proactive policy-making to fully leverage AI in VFX.
